Definitely the association with Black culture. But also, the fact coquette still falls under the expectations for women to be gentle, demure, and "traditionally feminine" with soft colors. The hoochie mama aesthetic is too "loud" and bold for the image of a delicate, but still seductive, woman. So sexist gender expectations play a part, as well.

That's why I don't like when people belittle aesthetics as just "romanticizing" certain lifestyles. Sure, there's a lot of people who do that. But the people actually into the aesthetic AND lifestyle know how to appreciate what it stands for. I'm against gatekeeping, people should be free to express themselves just because they like how an aesthetic looks without being made to feel like "posers", but they should also respect that there's more to it than the look.

I luv this video. I took a DNA test because I’m Black American and wanted to find out my lineage. My maternal lineage is from the Bamileke people of Cameroon. So I found traditional cloth from that tribe and I’m trying to incorporate it into this aesthetic. It’s beautiful to find pride and beauty in our roots and not feel like we have to ho outside ourselves!💕✨🩵
